I was particularly interested in seeing Anna Deavere Smith's depiction of Reverend Al Sharpton. because he is such a well known figure. I have seen and listened to Al Sharpton speak on multiple occasions and am therefore very familiar with his manner of speaking and his body language. Sharpton has a very unique way of speaking that is singular to him. I think Smith does an incredible job of depicting Sharpton because she captures his speech pattern quite well. He has a tendency of yelling out each word in a short and succinct manner. Smith emulates this pattern and adds the raspy texture of Sharpton's voice. She also captures his head movements and his stiff posture. Smith also captures Sharpton's facial expressions quite well. Overall, the suit and the lighting add to Smith's portrayal of Sharpton. I imagine this character was especially challenging for Smith because he is so well known. Most audience members probably had an idea of what a Sharpton depiction was supposed to look and sound like and this can be quite daunting for an actor.
